Adding audio to a Shopify site: blog posts and pages

Shopify is more than a storefront: its blog and guide pages carry a lot of content. Here is how to add an audio version, what the platform allows, and its real limits.

Shopify is built first to sell, but most stores publish far more than product pages: a blog, buying guides, "about" pages, advice articles. That content serves search and trust, and it benefits from being listenable for customers who browse on mobile, on the move, or without the appetite to read a long guide. This article explains, concretely, how to add audio to a Shopify site, what works well, and what you should know before you start.

What Shopify allows, and what it constrains

Shopify is a hosted platform: you do not control the server, but you edit the theme (Liquid files) and you can insert code into your pages and posts. That is enough to integrate an audio player, provided you pick the right method. Two approaches coexist depending on your technical comfort and how much content you want to narrate.

The first adds the player article by article, pasting a block into the content editor. Simple, no risk to the theme, but tedious if you have dozens of posts or publish often. The second inserts the player once into the theme's article template, so it appears automatically on every new post. Cleaner, but it means touching the theme, so a little caution and a backup first.

The clean route: integrate through the theme template

If you are comfortable with the theme editor, inserting into the article template (often article.liquid or a dedicated section) is the durable solution. The player is placed once, usually just under the title, and turns up on all your articles with no further action. That is what we recommend for stores that publish regularly: you stop thinking about audio, and it keeps up with your blog.

For stores that manage content through a feed, our RSS feed automatically detects new articles and narrates them with no manual step. Shopify exposes a feed for its blog, which makes this automation possible. You publish, the audio is prepared, and the player is there when the customer arrives.

The quick route: paste a block per article

If you only have a handful of guides to narrate, or you would rather not touch the theme, manual insertion into the article editor works well. You switch the editor to HTML mode, paste the player block where you want it, and publish. The upside is full control of placement; the downside is that you redo it for each new article. For a store that publishes two guides a quarter, that is perfectly acceptable. For an active blog, prefer the template.

The limits to know before you promise anything

Let us be clear on two points. First, product pages are not articles: narrating them rarely makes sense, because a customer wants a price and specs, not a text to listen to. Audio shines on long content (guides, comparisons, advice pages), much less on a three line product blurb. Do not sell the idea of a fully listenable catalogue; it is neither useful nor credible.

Second, some Shopify themes or apps inject code that can clash with a poorly placed player. Test on a duplicated theme before publishing, check the mobile display, and make sure the text stays fully present: audio is added to the content, it does not replace it. That rule is also what makes the audio version useful for accessibility, a point covered in our article on the European Accessibility Act for e-commerce, which directly concerns many stores.

Measure before you extend

As everywhere, honesty means looking at real usage. Turn audio on for your three most visited guides, let it run for a month, and check the listening analytics: how many visitors start playback, on which pages, how far they get. You will know whether your customers actually listen to your content or not, and you will extend only where it works. A well read advice blog often suits audio; a "shipping" page much less.

Where to start

Pick your most visited buying guide, add the player (through the theme if you publish often, by hand otherwise), check the mobile display, and share it. You will quickly see whether the format finds its audience in your store, with no rebuild and no commitment.
