Audio SEO: what actually moves rankings
Adding a player does not rank an article. Four things around the audio do, and one common setup actively costs you traffic. A practical, unvarnished account.
"Audio SEO" is a phrase that gets used to mean two incompatible things. Sometimes it means optimising audio content so that it is found, podcasts, mostly. Sometimes it means adding audio to a page in the hope that the page ranks better. The first is a real discipline. The second is mostly wishful, and worth being precise about, because the wishful version is the one being sold.
The uncomfortable part first
Attaching an MP3 to an article does not make the article rank. Search engines do not listen to your audio and grade it. There is no ranking factor called "has an audio version". A page with a player and a page without one, everything else equal, are the same page as far as the crawler is concerned.
This needs saying plainly because the opposite is implied constantly, usually by omission. If a vendor tells you audio improves SEO and does not immediately explain the mechanism, the honest reading is that there isn't one.
What is true is that four things around the audio have measurable effects. They are worth doing. They are just not the audio itself.
1. Engagement, which is the real indirect lever
Readers who play the audio stay longer. That is not a theory, it is arithmetic: an eight-minute reading holds a session open in a way scrolling does not. Time on page and return visits are behavioural signals, and whatever weight any given engine puts on them, they are unambiguously good for the business regardless of the crawler.
The effect is strongest on long pieces, which are exactly the pieces that lose readers halfway. An article that half your audience abandons at the third paragraph and an article they finish are different assets, and the second one earns links.
2. Synced transcripts are text, and text is what gets indexed
This is where audio genuinely intersects with search, and it is underused. A read-along transcript, the text displayed and highlighted in step with the voice, is ordinary indexable text on the page. If the audio contains material the article does not (an interview, a commentary track, an introduction recorded separately), the transcript puts that material into the index. Without it, everything spoken is invisible.
The rule is simple and often broken: anything that exists only as speech does not exist for search. Publish the text.
3. The podcast feed is a discovery channel of its own
Turning a site's articles into a podcast feed gets you into a second search surface entirely, the directories, where competition is thinner and the query intent is different. A local news title competing against national outlets on the open web can be the only relevant result in its own city inside a podcast app.
This is not "SEO" in the strict sense and that is precisely the point: it is traffic that does not depend on the ranking you are currently stuck at. Episode titles and descriptions are the fields that do the work there, and they are usually left as automatic copies of the article headline, which wastes the channel.
4. Accessibility widens the audience that can link to you
An article available in audio is usable by people who cannot comfortably read it, visual impairment, dyslexia, and the much larger group reading on a phone while doing something else. A wider audience produces more shares and more links, which are the signals nobody disputes. It also happens to be a legal obligation for a growing set of publishers in Europe, which makes it the rare investment with two independent justifications.
The setup that quietly costs you
One configuration is worth checking today: audio that loads inside an iframe from another domain, or a player injected by a script that runs after the page renders and pushes the article text down. The first puts your transcript on somebody else's domain, where any indexing benefit accrues to them. The second delays your largest contentful paint, which is a page-speed signal that genuinely counts.
The fix in both cases is the same. The player should be part of the page, the transcript should be in the HTML the crawler receives, and neither should block the article from rendering. It is worth thirty seconds with your browser's developer tools to confirm which of the two you have.
What to do with structured data
Marking up the audio helps machines understand the page rather than rank it, which still matters as answer surfaces expand.
